Course Approvals

We are not affiliated with ASSE, which is often required by the local water purveyors in Pennsylvania.

Our course and certifications are based on the TREEO 2nd Edition materials, so many water purveyors accept our course due to this. Many smaller jurisdictions have no real preference and accept our course or anything equivalent.

Some places do list an American Backflow Prevention Association (ABPA) Certification, which our course is valid as a pre-requisite training and prep for this exam. The application and manual are linked below.

How Do I Become a Backflow Tester in Pennsylvania ?

Since there is no state level agency regulating testers, each local jurisdiction chooses which backflow testers to accept. Most accept either ASSE or ABPA testers, but many also accept NEWWA, TREEO, or reciprocate with neighboring states.

Which Backflow Preventer Testing Procedures Should I Use ?

There are a bunch of options when it comes to testing backflow preventers as far as which procedures to use. We have found that the ASSE 5000 Single Hose Procedures are most efficient if you can use them, and have fewer requirements as far as equipment, connector tees, and number of hoses and adapters needed.

On our YouTube channel, we created a series of videos where we test the four types of preventers using these procedures if you're not familiar with them:

Reduced Pressure Principle (RPZ) - ASSE 5000 Single Hose Procedures

Double Check Valve Assembly (DCV) - ASSE 5000 Single Hose Procedures

Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB) - ASSE 5000 Single Hose Procedures

Spill Resistant Vacuum Breaker (SVB) - ASSE 5000 Single Hose Procedures
